Once upon a time, TV personality and fashion stylist Fuzz Ali (@fuzzz) was the owner of a small bar in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. Now he’s bringing us flavour-forward cocktail recipes inspired by his Fijian heritage and perfectly tailored for your Pride celebrations.
Fuzz says he loves connecting with people through making drinks. “There’s something magical about throwing together awesome ingredients to create something that’s festive for the eyes and on the palate,” he says. He thinks the tropical cocktail trend says a lot about what we’re really craving. “Covid-19 kept us locked up for 2 years, so we’re seeking to escape to somewhere gorgeous and tropical,” Fuzz says. “Cocktails can transport you to paradise, through the theatre of making them, and the taste when they hit your tongue.”
As for celebrating Pride, well, that means something too. “As a queer man of colour, I see Pride as a celebration of how far we’ve come as a community, but also a reminder of the journey ahead,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to come together with community and allies to raise a glass to those before us, and the world we’re creating for those who will come after us. In a world that still, at times, stands in opposition to us, Pride is when we get to be brightly, unapologetically, unquestionably ourselves. Pride is a celebration of authenticity.”
Planning your Pride party? Fuzz’s advice is, don’t overthink it. “Have easy to make drinks, and chic, no-fuss grazing boards out,” he says. “Keep it simple – gorgeous cheeses (always a hard, a soft, and a blue), cold-cut meat, fresh fruit, butter, honey, and some beautiful fresh bread. The purpose of a Pride party is to be with your people – so be with them!”
This is a simple cocktail but it hits all the right buttons when it comes to flavour.
“Lemon Love is a feisty citrus cocktail to be made in a hurry, so when you’re on a fun date you’re serving up some bold, fresh flavours quickly, but with impact,” Fuzz says.
Ingredients (serves 1)
Ice cubes, to serve
30ml Tilde Australian Raw Vodka
15ml Cawsey’s Sugar Syrup
Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic Water, to serve
Dried lime slices, to serve
Method
1. Fill a short serving glass with ice. Add the vodka, lemon juice and sugar syrup. Stir to combine.
2. Top with tonic and garnish with dried lime.
There’s more than one way to celebrate Pride, and Fuzz says this cocktail shows you don’t need to be under the spotlight to shine. “Grapefruit Granny is for a quiet night in, with a little bit of effort to create something delicious and beautiful,” he says. “I’ve leaned into citrus flavours to create a refreshing, sophisticated drink centred around Archie Rose Gin, which I love.”
Ingredients (serves 1)
Ice cubes, to serve
60ml Archie Rose Signature Dry Gin
Fever Tree Pink Grapefruit Soda, to serve
Cocktail florals, to serve
Method
1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin and lime juice. Shake until well combined and chilled.
2. Strain into a tall serving glass and top with soda. Garnish with cocktail florals.
It may be made from local ingredients, but Tilde Raw Australian Vodka sends Fuzz on a flavour journey to a Pacific paradise. “The scent takes me back to growing up in Fiji – the smell of sugarcane and citrus, and that lingering aniseed note which is so sophisticated,” he says.
Archie Rose Distilling Co. is a supporting partner of Sydney WorldPride 2023, and Fuzz describes Archie Rose Signature Dry Gin as a modern classic. “It’s a uniquely Australian expression of a classic gin,” he says. “The gorgeous citrus notes accompanied by the unquestionable eucalyptus sentiment smack of summer – warm, balmy, luxurious. I can’t think of anything better!
