Do brunch her way this Mother’s Day

Looking for ways to celebrate Mother’s Day? Take your pick from three easy brunch menus matched with delicious drinks.

There comes a time when breakfast in bed loses its impact on Mother’s Day. When the kids get a little older, it’s time to celebrate with a sophisticated brunch that’s more than cold tea and toast as the little ones jump on the bed.

This year, let Mum sleep in while you prepare a simple yet decadent brunch using ingredients and products available at your local supermarket. And since brunch is practically lunch, raise a toast to this special occasion with a late-morning cocktail or glass of wine. French, Aussie or Middle Eastern flavours your thing? Use these three easy menu ideas to help you create the best Mother’s Day brunch.

French-style Mother’s Day brunch

What better way to say Je t’aime maman (I love you mum) than with a French-inspired spread. Warm up store-bought quiche and croissants to serve with gourmet jams. If you’re happy to cook, make brioche French toast topped with fresh fruit and icing sugar. Or simply tear pieces of crusty baguette and spread with pâté and mini cornichons or sliced brie, flaked almonds and a drizzle of honey. Pair with a delicate French-style red such as James Busby Vineyard Series Tasmania Pinot Noir, a finalist in the Premium Red (Lighter Varietals) category at the 2023 Best of Wine Awards.

While the food can be effortlessly indulgent, the table should be dressed like a Parisian – simple, understated but undeniably chic. Choose a fine linen tablecloth, a vase of her favourite flowers (roses are a French favourite) and set out your best cutlery and crockery. Then mix up a French 75 cocktail – a classic concoction of sugar syrup, lemon juice, gin and sparkling wine. She’ll love the unique botanicals in Roku Gin, which also makes an elegant gift.

Middle Eastern inspired Mother’s Day brunch

A Middle Eastern brunch is all about mezze – an abundant assortment of dishes served in individual bowls or as part of a large grazing board so diners can help themselves. Head to the deli to pick up olives, falafel, dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) and a couscous or tabouleh salad.

Dips are another mezze must, such as hummus, baba ghanoush and beetroot. Spoon them into bowls and drizzle with a little olive oil and sprinkle with dukkah or fresh pomegranate seeds for extra authenticity. Bigger kids can cut up fresh crudités for dipping (radishes, cucumber, carrots and celery), while younger children can tear up pita bread. To satisfy any sweet tooths, slice watermelon and sprinkle with fresh mint and crumbled fetta, or provide a medley of dried fruit and nuts, such as apricots, dates and pistachios. Pick small branches of herbs or flowers from the garden to finish off the table.

Such a flavour-filled feast pairs nicely with red wine – try the bold herb and chocolate flavours of Hither & Yon Cabernet Sauvignon, which was a finalist in the Red $30 and Under (Bolder Varietals) category at the 2023 Best of Wine Awards. Or celebrate one of the Middle East’s most popular fruits with a pomegranate gin fizz made with chilled Ginfusion Pink Grapefruit with Pomegranate and sparkling mineral water, garnished with slices of pink grapefruit.

Aussie Mother’s Day brunch

Say ‘good on ya, Mum’ with an Aussie-style brunch menu that will rival her favourite café. Toast banana bread slices and top with ricotta, sliced strawberries and a drizzle of golden syrup. Make petite breakfast trifles by layering yoghurt with granola and fresh fruit salad.

If mum won’t be a happy little Vegemite without her daily fix, give her a gourmet version with a mozzarella and Vegemite toastie made on Turkish bread. Or jazz up smashed avocado on sourdough by sprinkling it with chopped bacon, goat’s cheese and chilli flakes. Even Weet-Bix can become an upmarket brunch dish with a bit of imagination – whizz them in a blender with fruit and milk for a delicious smoothie or split them down the middle and top with pesto and grilled tomatoes.

Caffeine has replaced Milo as our national drink, so mum is sure to love a smooth and creamy Curatif Archie Rose Espresso Martini which comes in cans ready to drink. Or pour her a Fellr Cocktail Seltzer Passionfruit Martini to sip while enjoying mini pavlovas drizzled with fresh passionfruit. You can’t get much more Aussie than that!
