The Essential Hit List For A Winter Margaret River Trip

With its pristine white sands, turquoise waters and perfect barrels, Margaret River is a classic summer hotspot. But while the off-season is decidedly quieter, it’s also when this coastal gem reveals its hidden charms.

“There’s something mesmerising about watching clouds and rain showers drift over the vineyards while sheep roam freely,” says Natalie Burch on winter at Howard Park, the Margaret River winery, founded by her parents, which she now helms. Picture yourself sipping spirits at buzzy local distilleries, or soaking in dramatic coastal vistas, Cabernet Sauvignon in hand and a charcuterie board by the fire. If you’re ready to book those flights, we asked Burch to share her local insights. Keep reading for the top spots to play, eat and stay in the Margaret River Region.

The perfect day in Margaret River always starts with…

A refreshing dog walk along Prevelly Beach, followed by a leisurely breakfast with friends at the White Elephant.

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive at Howard Park is…

Our cellar door. It was designed by my Mum, Amy, with feng shui principles in mind. After the long, winding driveway, the winery stands at the highest point in the vineyard. As you enter the cellar door, you’re greeted by a large space that can seem imposing, yet it exudes a welcoming warmth.

Our winemaking philosophy in three words…

Meticulous, artisanal, elegant.

The wine we always make sure people try is…

Well, where do I even begin? With quite a bit of history behind us, we have so many favourites for every occasion and season. Our Jete sparkling range is a must-try. We were one of the first in the state to make sparkling wine using the méthode traditionnelle, and it gets better every year. Nic is really pushing the boundaries with this range. And of course, our Chardonnays, Pinots, and Cabernets each have their own story to tell.

Our wine chapel is perfect for your group if…

You want a private space where you can enjoy being wined and dined, whether you’re feeling lively or prefer a quieter atmosphere. The wine chapel offers an intimate setting with a beautiful view of the vineyard. We’ve hosted everything from fun, extravagant parties to intimate gatherings here, making it a great space for any type of event.

The perfect accompaniment to our Terroir Margaret River Chardonnay is…

Our Chardonnay pairs beautifully with many dishes, but scallops are an absolute match made in heaven.

After visiting Howard Park we always recommend guests check out…

There are some great beach walks along the coast such as Moses Rock to Quinninup Falls or along Gnarabup and Prevelly Beach. A bush walk through Boranup Forest is an absolute must to really immerse yourself in the incredible beauty of the area.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong at…

Morries is a favourite of mine, I’m there every week. Mikis Open Kitchen and De’sendent both offer incredible dining experiences, whilst The Settler’s Tavern is always fun and great for exploring the wine list with some mates.
